Rjukan is a town and administrative center of the city Tinn in Telemark, Norway. Steep slopes of the surrounding mountains completely block the sunlight illuminating the city Ryukan. It is located in the Vestfjord Dalen, between Møsvatn and Tinnsjå, and got its name after Rjukanfossen ("The Smoking Waterfall") west of the city. The Tinn city council granted city status for Rjukan in 1996. The town has 3,386 inhabitants (January 2007).
Counted every year from September to March which is the winter, Rjukan area did not receive sunlight.
In the past, residents take advantage Ryukan gondola that will transport them to areas that receive sunlight at the top of the mountains. But since the launch of Project Solspeil or above Ryukan Sun Mirror in 2013, residents do not need to climb to the top using the gondola to feel the warmth of the sun.
